About Eyelid Surgery

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are those who are concerned about the appearance of their upper or lower eyelids. Common undesirable issues include drooping or excessively wrinkled skin, bulges or puffiness, lack of a defined eyelid crease and dark circles under their eyes (caused by hollowing). The latest advances in eyelid surgery used by Dr. Hubbard enable him to create tighter, more even, clearer skin around the eyes and a more defined eyelid crease.

A Variety of Advanced Treatment Options

Blepharoplasty has undergone great advances, even in the last 5 to 10 years. Sophisticated lower eyelid surgical techniques are safer and produce more natural-looking rejuvenation. Sometimes solutions extend beyond only removing skin and fat. No two blepharoplasties are exactly the same and each patient must receive careful analysis.

Extreme Importance of Fat to the Lower Lid

Often an aged appearance in the lower lid area is due to hollowing. In fact, the only sign of aging for some individuals is not the result of loose skin or fat bulges, but hollowing in the lower lid area. It can be inherited and seen as early as the 20s. Modern lower lid blepharoplasty or eyelid tuck procedures achieve greater efficacy and a higher degree of improvement with the addition of fat injections.

The Procedure

Also referred to as an eyelid lift in Virginia Beach, eyelid surgery is usually performed under sedation and local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. For the upper eyelid, an incision is made where the natural crease should be. For the lower lid, the incision is inside the eyelid (transconjunctival), leaving no visible scar, or just beneath the lower lid lashes—sometimes both. Suitable amounts of excess fat and skin are removed. Treatment may also involve laser resurfacing for enhanced results. The addition of the patient's own fat to hollow areas around the eyes can dramatically improve the issue of dark circles.

After the Procedure

Recovery varies with different techniques. Some blepharoplasty patients can return to work in 3 or 4 days. Some techniques, such as correcting a low malar bag on the cheek, will require a longer recovery.

Any discomfort following eyelid surgery is temporary, usually mild and easily managed with oral medications. Typically after 3 to 6 days, all sutures are removed. At that point, we welcome our patients to receive a complimentary makeup session from our skin care specialist to conceal any discoloration. Bruising and swelling usually subsides in 1 to 2 weeks.

Further Enhancement

Sometimes a brow lift alone can sufficiently improve the upper eyelids, but a brow lift also serves as a great complement to blepharoplasty. Also, other facial procedures like a facelift, cheek implants and fat injections can provide excellent enhancement of the lower lid area.

Please visit our photo gallery to see additional examples of eyelid surgery. Most medical photography uses bright, artificial frontal light that eliminates shadows and does not allow wrinkles to show. However, the lighting in our photos simulates the light that we experience every day so that the photos depict more true-to-life results. Notice that we are careful to use the same lighting before and after surgery to be as honest and consistent as possible. The stunning transformations shown were achieved with meticulous treatment planning and the right combination of techniques.
