Injectable dermal fillers at our Virginia Beach practice add facial volume and ease the look of fine or deep wrinkles with just a few quick injections. When administered by an experienced injector, such as our registered nurse, Denise Kail, the proven active ingredients in these powerful products can offer long-lasting results that complement a surgical procedure or look beautiful on their own.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Injectable dermal fillers use scientifically backed ingredients to plump wrinkles from the inside, effectively reducing their appearance. Although the results of dermal fillers are not permanent, they can last for many months.

At our practice in Virginia Beach, we use several types of injectable dermal fillers. The most popular of these is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and other tissues throughout the body. HA helps keep skin soft, supple, and resilient, but production dwindles with age. Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®, are popular with Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads-area patients for easing lines around their noses and mouths. They can also be used to improve the size and contour of the lips and to add volume to the cheeks.

Another ingredient used in dermal fillers is calcium hydroxylapatite. This ingredient, found in RADIESSE®, provides support for the skin's existing collagen structure, facilitating healthy growth for long-lasting results. Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers do not use animal ingredients, which means that the odds of an allergic reaction are lessened. Calcium hydroxylapatite is best for very deep wrinkles and is also indicated for people who have lost volume in their cheeks and temples as the result of age or illness.

Are Dermal Fillers for Me?

Part of what makes injectable dermal fillers so popular is their versatility. These treatments can be mixed and matched and applied to various areas of the face for completely customizable facial rejuvenation. If you're bothered by lines, wrinkles, or folds, our certified nurse injector works with you to develop a tailored approach that meets your specifications.

The most popular areas to be treated by injectable fillers include:

  • Nasolabial folds, which run from the nose to the corners of the mouth
  • "Marionette lines," which extend downward from the corners of the mouth
  • Vertical lip lines, sometimes called "smoker's lines" or "lipstick lines"
  • Corners of the mouth
  • Temples
  • Cheeks
  • Lips

What Is the Filler Procedure Like?

During a dermal filler treatment, Denise, our expert injector, begins by cleansing the targeted areas and marking them to ensure accuracy. She may also apply a topical anesthetic to numb the injection sites, although many of today's fillers come pre-formulated with anesthetic ingredients. Once your injections are completed, a cold compress can minimize swelling.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Unlike with BOTOX® Cosmetic, which works differently, the results of dermal fillers are often immediately visible. Following a treatment, patients may return to their regular activities as soon as possible, although some report tenderness, redness, itching, or bruising around the injection site. These side effects are temporary and typically last only a couple of days. Patients should avoid products that contain aspirin as well as alcohol consumption both before and after a treatment in order to minimize bleeding and bruising.

The staying power of fillers depends largely on the type of filler used, where on the face it is administered, and the patient's own physiology.

Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Perlane®, Restylane, and JUVÉDERM, typically last between 6 and 9 months. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC and Sculptra® Aesthetic, which are used to add volume to the cheeks, can last for up to 2 years.

RADIESSE, which uses calcium hydroxylapatite, generally lasts for about a year.
