What Is BOTOX Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic is an injectable treatment that uses a purified form of botulinum toxin to temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles. BOTOX was initially developed and approved by the FDA in the 1980s to treat facial spasms, such as excessive blinking. In 2002, BOTOX was approved for cosmetic use, and it quickly became one of the most popular non-surgical treatments at plastic surgery practices throughout the country. Today, BOTOX Cosmetic is used to treat glabellar lines (the vertical lines that form between the eyebrows, sometimes called frown lines), crow's feet, and a number of other areas of the face where excessive muscle activity contributes to an aged appearance. Its medical uses include treating a variety of conditions, from excessive sweating to chronic migraines.

Is BOTOX Cosmetic for Me?
BOTOX Cosmetic is a good match for Hampton Roads-area adults who are bothered by the look of wrinkles on the upper face that form due to movement, such as making regular facial expressions. These kinds of wrinkles that linger during and after forming an expression are called dynamic wrinkles. During your consultation, our nurse injector will help you decide whether BOTOX Cosmetic, dermal fillers, or a combination of treatments is right for you.
What Is the BOTOX Procedure Like?
At our practice in Virginia Beach, BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by our nurse injector.
Our nurse injector begins your treatment by first cleansing the targeted area. Topical numbing cream is available if desired. She may also mark your skin to help guide her placement. She administers a series of quick injections, which feel like small pinches. She may then apply ice or a cold compress to reduce swelling and any discomfort.
Most BOTOX Cosmetic appointments last less than 30 minutes, making them ideal for anyone in search of a quick treatment that produces noticeable results.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
The results of a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment typically take a few days to develop, with final results visible after about 7 to 10 days.
In the meantime, some patients report irritation, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site. These symptoms are generally mild and resolve within a few days. Patients are advised to avoid activities that require bending or stooping for several hours following a procedure. Additionally, patients should avoid manipulating the treated area to allow the product to settle.
The results of a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment last up to about 4 months, and there is some evidence that repeated treatments can prolong results over time.
